The term “philosophy” means, “love of wisdom.” In a broad sense, philosophy is an activity people undertake when they seek to understand fundamental truths about themselves, the world in which they live, and their relationships to the world and to each other.
Actually, the first noted philosophers appeared some 2500 years ago in Ancient Greece. They were inspired to question based on their environment, the world around them. The concepts from philosophy result from more than finding answers to fundamental questions. Philosophising is the actual process of searching for those answers.
Moreover, philosophy is not reserved for the profound or eccentric. Actually, it’s what we all do when we are free from the business of daily dealings. In fact, every human being on the planet is naturally inquisitive and curious. We can’t help wondering about the world, our place within it and our purpose here.
Furthermore, every human has the capacity to think and reason intellectually. Hence, whenever we’re rationalising a problem, we’re thinking philosophically.
The first-ever people who considered concepts from philosophy may have lived long before those first recorded in ancient Greece and China. Dissatisfied with the established explanations of religion, human behaviour and custom, the first philosophers began to question. They wanted to go beyond.
Debate and dialogue are encouraged in schools of philosophy. Even though many people believe that philosophers in isolation arrive at their conclusions, this is not likely.
When the concepts of philosophy are discussed, we rely on logic and language. The idea of constructing a rational and logical argument set philosophy apart from superstition.
As Voltaire said, “Superstition sets the whole world in flames, philosophy quenches them.”
