The Guy In The Glass

The Guy In The GlassI love this poem “The Guy In The Glass” by Dale Wimbrow.  Actually, it reminds me that there is no hiding from yourself, or certainly not for long.

The Guy In The Glass

When you get what you want in your struggle for pelf,
And the world makes you King for a day,
Then go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that guy has to say.
For it isn’t your Father or Mother or Wife,
Who judgement upon you must pass.
The feller whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the guy staring back from the glass.
He’s the feller to please, never mind all the rest,
For he’s with you clear up to the end,
And you’ve passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the guy in the glass is your friend.
You may be like Jack Horner and “chisel” a plum,
And think you’re a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum
If you can’t look him straight in the eye.
You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you’ve cheated the guy in the glass.

What Makes Us Hide From Who We Really Are?

In today’s society, we move towards more and more comparison.  We compare ourselves to other people, our old selves, and illusions of the perfect life presented to us on social media.

Moreover, many of us have grown up with inherent feelings of shame, perhaps feeling that we’re not good enough or we have to prove that we’re good enough.  Actually, we don’t.

It’s useful to consider that societal, familial and religious teachings influence us at a very young age.  What’s more, it wasn’t always fashionable to motivate children with carrot. Hence, we may have accepted unhelpful ideas about who we are and who we should be.  Perhaps we feel we’ll never catch up.

Actually, your version of a happy life is the only thing worth striving for.  The more you trust you instincts, the more you demonstrate you accept yourself.
