Theodore Forstmann – An Inspiring Letter

The Source of Inspiration

We can all find inspiration in any life experience, conversation or activity.  Actually, this one, by Theodore Forstmann is an inspiring letter for me.  Specifically, it allows me to think of wisdom as a treasure.  In fact, that experience where we delve into knowledge and then allow our self-reflection to deliver our own unique form of wisdom excites me.

Theodore Forstmann - An Inspiring LetterYou’ll have probably gathered by now that I love to gain inspiration from those who’ve achieved enormous success.  I have two favourite letters that I found in “Letters From Leaders” compiled by Henry O. Dormann.  This is my favourite section from one of them from Theodore Forstmann – a pioneer in the investment industry.

Theodore Forstmann – An Inspiring Letter

“Real wealth is not physical.  Real wealth comes in the form of ideas.  Physical wealth can disappear; the government can take it away, terrorists can take it away, and so on.  Metaphysical wealth cannot be taken away, and it is a driver for all of the growth that takes place in the world.  So, when I talk to kids, I say “Don’t ask me how to make a lot of money because I don’t even know.”  I don’t even think that’s a particularly worthy goal.  Instead, be aware of the existence of metaphysical wealth, or in other words, be aware of your own thought process.  Be true to yourself, because you don’t have anything in the world but yourself.  Lose yourself and you’ll have nothing.”

I think he’s right.  In search of only wealth, we lose ourselves and in search of happiness, we miss the happy moments that exist in the now.  In search of influence and power, we become what we perceive others think we should be … and where does that leave us?  Chasing our subjective projections and potentially heading rapidly into a black hole!
