Why Should We Find New Ways To Keep Our Brains Active?

We’re constantly finding new ways to keep our bodies healthy – our hearts, our liver, our digestion system, etc. However,  have you ever thought about how important it is to keep your brain healthy?

Brain health is essential for making sure we live our lives to the best of our abilities, no matter what age we are. Our brain controls how we think, how we speak, and how we act, so it is essential we keep our mind as active as possible at all times.

As we grow older, our risks of developing serious life-changing diseases increases, and the health of the brain is a major factor in how at-risk we actually are. Although we cannot change our genetic inheritance, we can make changes in our lifestyles that can significantly reduce our risks of developing diseases such as Alzhiemers or dementia.

How Are You Keeping Your Brain Alive?

Studies have shown that you can help prevent cognitive decline and reduce the risk of dementia with some basic good health habits:

  • keep your brain alivestaying physically active
  • getting enough sleep
  • not smoking
  • having good social connections
  • limiting alcohol to no more than one drink a day
  • eating a Mediterranean style diet.

In addition to the tips shown above, here are a few more things we can do to keep our brain alive!

  1.  Use all of our sensory functions – perhaps learn a musical instrument that requires more than one sensory function to learn.
  2. Practice Using Your Memory.  Try to remember phone numbers and shopping lists off by heart, rather than relying on electronic devices to jog your memory.
  3. Keep Learning.  Many people forget that one of the joys of life is continuing to learn, even after our formal education completes.  Find something you’re interested in and learn it from scratch.
  4. Find new ways.  Hence, if you travel to the supermarket or to work every day, find a new route so that routine does not implant itself in your memory.
  5. Trust Yourself.  If you believe that you become more forgetful as you get older, you will finding it harder to use your brain function.  Actually, research now shows that we can create new neural networks at ANY age, so don’t be fooled into the age story!
